IDEA 109: Housing

Description

This course is an introduction to the basics of accessible design and building codes and standards for housing. The course provides an overview of accessible housing policies, such as the set-aside approach and adaptable housing, as well as important trends in housing policy such as visitability. Students explore the needs of aging individuals in the housing market and the importance of the neighborhood in the universal design of housing.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to…

1. Identify the limitations of the set-aside approach to accessibility in U.S. housing.
2. Describe and explain the differences between the characteristics of adaptable housing, visitability, and lifespan design.
3. Describe the process and importance of de-institutionalization of housing for people with disabilities and other groups using examples from community-based rehabilitation and “normalization.”
4. Explain the importance of neighborhood context in universal housing in relation to traditional neighborhood development.

Format

Students must create a udeducation.org account and purchase the course. This course is on-demand, available anytime!

To complete this course, students must complete approximately 14.25 hours (LU | HSW) of work during a 1-year window of availability. There are no required sign-in times; however, there are established due dates designed to keep students working at a sufficient pace. Specifically, students must:

1. Read the assigned portions of the textbook: Universal Design: Creating Inclusive Environments (sold separately in print and e-book format at Wiley and Amazon).
2. Read additional assigned materials provided on the course website.
3. View all videos in their entirety.
4. Respond to at least 4 assignments on the discussion board, and respond to any instructor comments.
5. Correctly answer at least 70% of the multiple-choice questions on tests corresponding to each assignment within the time limits specified for each test.
