IDEA 110: Home Modifications

Description

This course examines the role that home modifications play in improving the fit between people and their homes. It describes the primary goals of home modifications and the policies and methods of home assessment. Additionally, it discusses several common home modifications and case studies to exemplify both good and bad home modifications.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to…

1. List, describe, and implement strategies for aging in place.
2. Describe the most common types of home modifications, giving examples of common strategies as well as common mistakes.
3. Identify the value of and differentiate between selected home assessment techniques and use them effectively.
4. Identify and evaluate cost-effective solutions where barriers exist and be able to recommend alternative methods for creating barrier-free entrances and bathrooms including curb-less showers.

Format

Students must create a udeducation.org account and purchase the course. This course is on-demand, available anytime!

To complete this course, students must complete approximately 12.25 hours (LU | HSW) of work during a 1-year window of availability. There are no required sign-in times; however, there are established due dates designed to keep students working at a sufficient pace. Specifically, students must:

1. Read the assigned portions of the textbook: Universal Design: Creating Inclusive Environments (sold separately in print and e-book format at Wiley and Amazon).
2. Read additional assigned materials provided on the course website.
3. View all videos in their entirety.
4. Respond to at least 4 assignments on the discussion board, and respond to any instructor comments.
5. Correctly answer at least 70% of the multiple-choice questions on each of two separate tests within the time limits specified for each test.
