Description

This course examines the personal and environmental factors related to general human performance tasks and design considerations for four bodies of knowledge related to human performance: anthropometry, biomechanics, perception, and cognition. Each body of knowledge is summarized and described based on its relationship to Universal Design, and specifically the four human performance-related Goals of Universal Design: body fit, comfort, awareness, and understanding.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to …

  • Identify, describe, and differentiate between each of the four bodies of knowledge in design for human performance.
  • Give examples of how each of the four bodies of knowledge is necessary to ensure safety and accessibility.
  • Describe how each of the four bodies of knowledge in design for human performance contributes to positive emotional responses.
  • Explain the difference between ergonomic design based on the bell curve and using universal design to enable equitable access by all users.

Format

Students must create a udeducation.org account and purchase the course. Access to this course begins immediately.

To complete this course, students must complete approximately 2.25 hours of work anytime during a 1-year window of availability. Specifically, students must:

  1. Read “Design for Human Performance” (Chapter 5, approximately 17,500 words) in the textbook: Universal Design: Creating Inclusive Environments (sold separately in print and e-book format at Wiley and Amazon).
  2. Correctly answer at least 10 out of 14 multiple-choice test questions within a single 28-minute session.
