Description

It is through social participation that the most important outcome of universal design, an inclusive society, is realized. A lack of social interaction can have a dehumanizing effect. Universal design practices and policies can eliminate barriers and offer innovative solutions to help facilitate and promote social participation. This course will teach design solutions for injury and disease prevention, positive mental health, and ensuring access to resources.

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to…

  • Explain why it is not sufficient to focus on social participation while ignoring the built environment.
  • Utilize universal design guidelines to design environments that support social participation for all.
  • Understand the SI theory, and explain the importance of the relationship between the physical and social environment.
