IDEA 309: Housing

Description

This course is an introduction to the basic concerns of accessibility and the building codes and standards that address accessibility in housing. The course begins with an overview of accessible housing policies, such as the set-aside approach and adaptable housing, and important trends in housing policy. The needs of aging individuals in the housing market are explored as well as the importance of the neighborhood in the universal design of housing.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to…

• Identify the limitations of the set-aside approach to accessibility in U.S. housing.
• Describe and explain the differences between the characteristics of adaptable housing, visitability, and lifespan design.
• Describe the process and importance of de-institutionalization of housing for people with disabilities and other groups using examples from community-based rehabilitation and “normalization.”
• Explain the importance of neighborhood context in universal housing in relation to traditional neighborhood development.

Format

Students must create a udeducation.org account and purchase the course. Access to this course begins immediately.

To complete this course, students must complete approximately 1.5 hours of work anytime during a 1-year window of availability. Specifically, students must:

1. Read “Housing” (Chapter 9, approximately 9,600 words) in the textbook: Universal Design: Creating Inclusive Environments (sold separately in print and e-book format at Wiley and Amazon).
2. Correctly answer at least 7 out of 10 multiple-choice test questions within a single 20-minute session.
