Description

This course examines the role that home modifications can play in improving the person-environment fit between individuals and their homes. It describes the purposes and primary goals of home modifications. Policies and methods of home assessment are discussed in relation to home modification practice. Additionally, several common modifications are discussed along with case studies of both exemplary and poor modifications.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to…

  • List, describe and implement strategies for aging in place.
  • Describe the most common types of home modifications, giving examples of common strategies as well as common mistakes.
  • Identify the value of and differentiate between selected home assessment techniques and use them effectively.
  • Identify and evaluate cost-effective solutions where barriers exist and be able to recommend alternative methods for creating barrier-free entrances and bathrooms including curb-less showers.

Format

Students must create a udeducation.org account and purchase the course. Access to this course begins immediately.

To complete this course, students must complete approximately 1.75 hours of work anytime during a 1-year window of availability. Specifically, students must:

  1. Read “Home Modifications” (Chapter 10, approximately 11,400 words) in the textbook: Universal Design: Creating Inclusive Environments (sold separately in print and e-book format at Wiley and Amazon).
  2. Correctly answer at least 7 out of 10 multiple-choice test questions within a single 20-minute session.
