IDEA 313: Public Transportation

Description

Public transportation plays an important role in creating an inclusive society. This course examines strategies for introducing universal design in public transportation systems from terminals to vehicle design. It teaches best practices in providing information, boarding, fare payment, and all other elements of any transit system. Case studies highlight the benefits of a universal design approach to transit.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to…

• List strategies for improving the effectiveness of existing transportation resources citing examples from case studies.
• Identify safety hazards at transit platforms for all types of people, including those with disabilities, and learn strategies for mitigating and eliminating these hazards.
• Identify the most common barriers to the use of transit terminals and vehicles to people with disabilities and identify current research and practices that aim at eliminating those barriers.
• Discuss the ways in which the internet and smartphones have changed the way transit information can be provided using examples related to ticketing, wayfinding, and system-wide information.

Format

Students must create a udeducation.org account and purchase the course. Access to this course begins immediately.

To complete this course, students must complete approximately 2.0 hours of work anytime during a 1-year window of availability. Specifically, students must:

1. Read “Universal Design and Public Transportation” (Chapter 13, approximately 13,500 words) in the textbook: Universal Design: Creating Inclusive Environments (sold separately in print and e-book format at Wiley and Amazon).
2. Correctly answer at least 8 out of 11 multiple-choice test questions within a single 22-minute session.
